Manganese

Approximately 1.3 million tonnes of manganese are extracted annually and this production volume makes the country the third largest producer in the world. The main quarries are in Serra dos Carajás, Iron Quadrangle and Maciço do Urucum. Countries such as Japan and the United States import almost 50% of total national production. Iron

Iron is the main ore aimedfor export in Brazil, its extraction occurs especially in Minas Gerais atthe Iron Quadrangle; in Pará at Serra dos Carajás; and in Mato Grosso do Sul at Maciço do Urucum. Its current production is approximately 235 million tonnes per year, placing the country as the second largest producer worldwide.

Bauxite

Bauxite is extracted at the Serra do Oriximiná, in Pará, its main producer and host of the largest concentration of this ore in the country. Annual production is around 17.4 million tonnes. Brazil is the third largest producer on a global scale.

Minas Gerais and Goiás states account for most of the niobium production reaching 38 thousand tonnes per year, making the country the world's largest producer. This ore has widespread use in state-of-the-art technology equipment manufacturing. Some Brazilian universities, such as USP, UNESP, and UFRJ research the characteristics of niobium in order to develop technologies in the sector of super conductors, in generation and transmission of electric energy, in transportation systems and in mining, being widely used in the construction of chemical, mechanical, aeronautical, biomedical and nuclear equipment.
